South Asian Women Writers
Susham Bedi was born in
Ferozpur, Punjab,
India and studied at Delhi University and Punjab University, Chandigarh. As a
teenager she became a leading actress in Hindi dramas on All India Radio and
later on television. She began writing at school and won many awards for
poetry and short stories as an undergraduate but her writing career began in
earnest in 1978 when her first story was published in the literary magazine
Kahani. Susham Bedi's first novel, Havan (Fire Sacrifice -- translated into
English by David Rubin) was serialised in the magazine Ganga and published as
a novel in 1989. It was published in Urdu in 1992.

Mother

I stood smiling at the cold vapid sea, as she came down the path wrapped in a faded shawl, her fair hair lifeless in the winter light. I knew she would be gone soon, and I would come back to an empty white shack on this shore. I would touch the walls, put my cheek to the cold stone and remember her hair on my face, heavy with salt. I would sit on the narrow iron cot, and look out at the barbed wire fence, remember the dust on the marigolds. We sat silently together on the beach for a long time enveloped by the smell of decaying seaweed. I did not see her leave. She had left me some strawberries half buried in the frozen sand.
